Zones in a long narrow garden

My clients’ garden is long and thin and turns a corner, so only a small part of it could be seen from the ground floor windows. A slate patio has already been added, but the rest of the garden had become over grown and with busy work lives difficult to manage, with a  lot of lawn, overgrown vegetable beds and a hedge that was slowing dying. The main focal point was a large run down metal shed.

The main part of the brief was to create different zone in the garden with living screens where possible. There must be space for entertaining and an area to grow fruit and veg that is free from encroaching weeds or lawn.

It was important to have interest with raised beds and focal points around the garden and a practical path to get from one area of the garden to the other.

I created a three zoned garden. Removing the dying hedge and replacing it will a simple fence gave us more space and less maintenance. The patio near the house accommodates the new smaller shed; that is hidden from view but allowing room for a small table and chairs for morning coffee. Generous beds add colour and fragrance here and can be seen from the house. Stepping stones through gravel take you to the kitchen garden, with small raised beds allowing space for dedicated produce growing. Through a small gate and past lush vibrant planting there is another patio bordered by raised beds for seating and crowned with a pergola to give height and in time colour with climbers at each post.
