· As we move into winter it is best to have a good tidy of the garden, clear away debris and fallen leaves around plants to avoid pockets of warm where pest may lurk.
· Cut back faded climbers and tie in any shoots to supports
· Plant bare rooted trees, shrubs and roses, fruit trees and bushes.
· Prune woody ornamental plants, fruit trees.
· Protect any exotic plants such as Bananas, Palms and Tree ferns with straw or fleece, bay trees in containers may also need protection from frost.
· Protect bay trees in pots from the cold, perhaps bring them indoors
· Avoid walking on lawns covered with frost
· Bring all watering equipment indoors, including hoses and sprinklers
· Check garden birds have water to drink, especially on frosty days when it might be frozen
· Choose a dry day to treat fences and timber structures with stain or preservative
· Clean and sharpen pruning tools
· Cut down dead perennials
· Deadhead pansies to prevent them setting seed and to keep them flowering longer
· Hang bird feeders over rose beds to attract birds to pick off overwintering pests
· Improve soil by incorporating compost concentrate around shrubs and the bases of hedges.
· Regularly wash and disinfect bird baths and feeders
· Remove leaves from ponds, and wash and store awaypond pumps and filters
· Send off for mail-order seed catalogues and start planning seed orders
· If shrubs or small trees need moving now is the time of year to do it
