A Formal garden with a modern twist

Box Hedging for a formal garden with a twist.

The existing garden was a complete blank canvas with the exception of some large trees in and surrounding the garden, all there remained following the house build was a large lawn.

The Client wanted to add some colour and interest in the garden as well as some practical seating areas and space to play for their growing family. The large trees at the rear of the garden were too shady for lawn to grow successfully and conkers were a danger if sitting beneath, there were no focal points, no areas of interest and no colour. Having seen some formal gardens in Barcelona, our client  loved the idea of some formal planting that had a modern twist. A large rectangular patio spanning the width of the house was already in place as part of the house build.

The solution – An area of formal planting was devised that was at a quirky angle to the house, cutting into the patio to bring colour in front of the living room patio doors, these asymmetrical beds were edged with low box hedge and planted in winter and spring with bulbs of blues and whites giving an early splash of colour followed in summer with bright hot coloured plants, as a contrast to the greens in the rest of the garden. A large olive tree was added to give interest as a special request by the client.

An arbour leads though the formal planting to a oak bench backed by high hedges, the path continues to a new area of the garden behind the hedges. This shady area is planted with shade loving plants. The beds continue around the garden boundary in large sweeping beds, with trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, the colours and hues changing, until the sunniest part of the garden when sun loving plants including lavender border a small path that leads back to the patio.
